ABOUT KATE
Kate Harrison is a first year student at Texas Christian University and a Strategic Communications major. After three years in a high school journalism program, she discovered a passion for connecting audiences with impactful, meaningful stories. Kate served on her high school’s nationally ranked newspaper as both Head Copy Editor and Lifestyles Editor. She brings strong skills in editing, writing, internal communication and leadership. She is also extremely passionate about using honest and engaging communication to help brands and organizations tell their stories. She is excited to continue to develop her professional skills, expand her public relations experience through internships, and explore and foster strategic communication relationships between people and the media. Kate is working toward a career in entertainment or sports public relations; fields that blend creativity, culture and fast-paced environments.
Additionally, Kate is a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority at TCU and hopes to become the sorority’s Vice President of Public Relations next year.

Hyping the Home Team
Goal: Increase the attendance of TCU women's basketball games by 25% through media and communication.
Researched the student body and crafted a message for our goal and segmented audience. Drafted and finalized a press release for the student newspaper and created a poster for campus.
This is related to professional communications because I will need to be able to research audiences and tailor messages for specific groups through press releases. The skills that I used for this assignment were writing, content creation and audience analysis.
Mind Matters Campaign
Goal: Create a digital press kit that supports Mind Matters.
Communicated with journalists through a digital media kit to gain attention for the Mind Matters campaign, which focuses on reducing the stigma surrounding mental health treatment for young adults. My goal was to provide journalists with easily assembled details and information in order for them to create an article.
This project used a multitude of skills including social media, writing, project planning, and research and design. This is related to professional communications because I will be making digital press kits often and I need to know what skills and elements are used.
Media Analysis
Goal: Comparison of Sephora’s media tactics on various social media platforms and their affect on their audiences
Analyze how Sephora is using Instagram and TikTok to deliver messages to a wide range of audiences. My goal was to analyze how these tactics work and compare their success rate.
This assignment used skills including writing, analysis, and social media inquiry. This is related to professional communications because I will need to be able to tailor messages based on different audiences across a multitude of social media platforms.
Documentary Film Research and Reflection
Goal: Create a reflection paper about the movie “She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry”
For this project, I watched and analyzed the documentary “She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry” to explore themes related to activism, gender and social movements. I also researched and wrote a detailed and thoughtful reflection about the documentary film.
This assignment demonstrated my ability to synthesize complex information and present it in a structured, persuasive essay. This is an essential skill for public relations within the professional field. It also demonstrates my research skills, as well as my ability to understand the audience which is important when creating campaigns and messages.
Entertainment Public Relations
Goal: Educate my class about entertainment public relations.
In this assignment, my group and I researched, interviewed a practitioner and wrote a comprehensive essay about entertainment public relations. We also created a presentation based on the detail in the essay and presented it in front of the class.
This assignment used a multitude of skills including writing, research, audience analysis, presentation skills, and public speaking. All of these skills are necessary to work in any professional sector of public relations. This was also a group effort which gave me experience in working as a team in relation to PR and helped grow my leadership skills.
